Artist Statement
Over the last few years, I've shifted my focus to abstraction, using light, colour, and shadow as metaphors for life, love, and loss. As an abstract painter, I need to have a theme for each body of work. It's essential to keep the pieces connected while still allowing for experimentation. Having parameters to work within helps ensure that the paintings don't lose their sense.
My most recent series, 'Sand and Stone,' is particularly meaningful to me. The Sydney sandstone that surrounds me during my daily walks and swims was the foundation of my upbringing. The federation house where I grew up was also built on sandstone, providing a sense of security that I cherish.
The inspiration for my work has always come from what surrounds me. As an artist, I've found that sandstone is an incredible conduit for light and colour, which have always been a big part of my practice. I'm excited to continue exploring its possibilities."
